The Kite Runner

Although I couldn't make it to the screening of The Kite Runner at GSC in One Utama KL, thanks to the wonders of the internet and a very courteous roomate of mine who's willing to borrow me his laptop, I managed to get my hands on the DVD rip version of the movie in avi format from torrent download (not that it's illegal).

The Kite Runner tells the story of Amir, a boy who is haunted by the guilt of betraying his childhood friend Hassan, the son of his father's Hazara servant. Set against a backdrop of tumultuous events, from the fall of the monarchy in Afghanistan through the Soviet invasion, the mass exodus of refugees to Pakistan and the United States
, and the Taliban regime (Wikipedia). The movie transcends discrimination and prejudice of what we perceive Afghans. Although the much talked about rape scene of sexual violence which wasn't even a big deal for any audience who's a movie buff like myself, sparked a controversy and lead to the movie being BANNED in Afghanistan due to some ethnic tension issues of a Hazara being raped by a Pashtun. Trust me, I've seen worst. No, not even close to adult films if you're thinking what I think you're thinking (grrr...).

What almost drew tears from me was when Amir found out about the death of his childhood friend Hassan who he never had the chance to apologize to. Instead in the end, Hassan wrote in the letter to Amir before he was killed saying that he will forever be waiting for the return of his friend in his home town despite all those years after Amir framed Hassan and betrayed their friendship. I wouldn't wanna elaborate any further or this entry would be a spoiler .

Truly a great movie and I could see why the book was (and still is) an international best seller from Khaled Hosseini.

My rating, 4 out of 5.

I wish I could fly kites like that.

Ah!! I just posted a long comment but was disconnected from the Internet! Well never mind!

Oh, I love the Kite Runner. I think it's one of the nicest movies about friendship that's ever made! It's spectacular...mere words just can't describe how incredible this movie is.

Yeah, it's so sad that Amir couldn't meet Hassan for one last time. Hassan is such a good and loyal friend, something that hard's to find now!

Have you read the book? I haven't and can't wait to get a copy.

P.S. your blog looks interesting!
