Like how much time I've had in my hands, I downloaded this bold and inspiring movie which plots on a wide spectrum of issues like racism, hate, anger and discrimination but all intelligently expressed on an emotionally gentle loving canvas. Probably that's the reason why the novel was a best-selling hit in the first place, people have become more conscious of these issues and more aware of the importance of equality and love. Something that I can't say for this country just yet.
First thing that hit me while I was scouring for my daily dose of inspiring movies when I saw this title was... "Documentary". Then when I read the summary and the amazingly talented casts involved in this production, I knew I just had to watch it. Come on, missing out on a performance from Dakota Fanning (from War of the Worlds) and Jennifer Hudson (from Dreamgirls)?! not forgetting Alicia Keys and Queen Latifah as well if I might add. The story talks about a girl who was trying to run away from her life and trying to find the truth and everything about her mother that left her when she was little. Turn of events that happened with her maid who was violently discriminated was her one way ticket to leaving that place and soon founded her way into the truth and set her free.
It was really an inspiring movie when it triggered and brought up a wide range and combination of emotions and feelings while watching this movie. There were times when I was mad as hell and wanted to slam the screen of my laptop and also felt sad and sorry during some scenes that
At the end of the movie, I felt completed inside my thoughts, adding another piece to my moral being, as though I've been brought into light and everything in life seems clearer.
That's why I just love movies with dialogs.

finally, justice has been served for Kuching's largest shopping mall.
I mean.. how ridiculous is it for a shopping mall in Malaysia without a cinema? let alone being one of the largest malls in town. I was checking out the latest movie releases from www.cinema.com.my and then happened to stumble on the news that MBO Cinemas is going to open an 8-hall cineplex in The Spring, Kuching's largest lifestyle mall in May.
The only MBO Cinemas that I've ever been to was in Melaka Mall opposite Jusco at Bukit Beruang in Melaka. Guess StarCineplex is going to have a hell of a fight with this one considering that they've been in the safe spot for almost a decade now without any reputable rivalry. I'll definitely still be in Kuching to check out the new cineplex when it opens during May later.

I downloaded the movie Changeling a month ago, few weeks ago I watched it, and now then I'm writing a review on it. Talking about being way off schedule.
I'm really touched by Angelina Jolie's portrayal of Christine Collins, a distressed single mother who has no one to turn to when the police force turned their backs against her by plotting a cover-up on the founding of her child, and stubbornly refused to admit that they found the wrong child. At a period when the police force was corrupted and when the people no longer had trust in justice, Christine Collins' had no one to turn to but a pastor from a weekly radio broadcast to find justice.
Jolie's bold portrayal in this movie is provoking and really different from her previous roles she played normally with guns and a sexy stare to die for, like in the assassin movie Wanted or Tomb Raider. This time, her fragile role of expressed emotions mostly with bitter tears of desperation of a defeated mother has landed her with a another nomination as lead actress at the Oscars this year. Although she did not win, her versatility and range in her acting skills has done her far more than mere recognition and appraisal.
If it's award-winning roles, inspiring dialogues, expressive tears, passionate emotions and bold acting skills with values that you're looking for in a movie. Changeling is definitely the movie to watch.

Being the movie fanatic that I am, I downloaded the 3 hour long 81st Annual Academy Awards (better known as The Oscars) and boy was it the BEST Academy Awards show movie event of the year EVER! I know it's a little due to post an entry on the Oscars but I just love it so much I kept on playing some of the scenes over and over again.
Since the event was held in the Kodak Theatre, it made sense to make the award show depicting a live theatrical performance. Hosted by Hugh Jackman, his opening number was absolutely the best opening monologue ever with a performance.
Even better when he swept Anne Hathaway (who can actually sing) off her feet literally and carrying her on center stage. Next thing you know, Anne Hathaway starts singing and went into the high note.
I guess this is the first time I've ever seen a stage so close to the audience and at the same time, I was rather daunted by it. It just seemed really awkward and terrifying for television viewers to watch in fear of not knowing what to expect or what would happen at a LIVE telecast. Take it from Anne Hathaway.
There were a few scenes from the show that I absolutely loved (other than the opening), one of them was for Best Original Screenplay when Tina Fey and Steve Martin had their hilarious opening appearance to present the nominations, after which was won by Dustin Lance Black for his original screenplay work for the movie Milk.
Also my favourite was during the video montage for Romance 2008 which featured movies last year like revolutionary road, slumdog millionaire, twilight, australia, milk, the curious case of benjamin button just to name a few, meshed and synched together with the song Lovers in Japan by Coldplay at the background. Simply beautiful, Coldplay has done it again. Then there's the montage for Action 2008, also blew me away at the "tick, tick, tick" part, AWESOME.
Then there's Heath Ledger for Best Supporting Role in which he won and his family accepted the Oscar on his behalf. Honestly, if I didn't know that Heath Ledger was being casted as The Joker in The Dark Knight in the first place, I wouldn't have known it was him because his depiction of the diabolic-cynical Joker was absolutely a work or art. I seriously have no idea how any future Batman sequels could top that.
For Best Actress in a Leading Role, I've only watched Changeling from nominee Angelina Jolie with her acting as a single mother who refuses to let her lost son be forgotten from a police cover up when police investigations found the wrong child, based on a true story. Her role was inspiring, bold and emotional. Although she didn't win, she looked stunningly gorgeous as always.
Kate Winslet won leading actress instead for the movie The Reader acting in a german role. I haven't watched it yet but I will soon enough. Downloaded of course.
If you watched last year's Leading Actress winner Marion Cotillard, her brilliant and stunning performance in the french movie La Vie En Rose which I happened to watched after The Academy Awards last year was admirable, her poise and voice in the portrayal of her character in the life of the famous French singer Édith Piaf got her instant nomination and recognition, now alongside Kate Winslet.
For Best Leading Actor, the Oscar goes to the legendary Sean Penn for his bold portrayal of Harvey Milk, the first openly gay rights activist and politician to be elected to public office and was assassinated in 1978. Knowing that this movie would NEVER see the light of day in Malaysian Cinemas, I will be downloading this movie as well.
The main category of the night was Best Motion Picture presented by Steven Spielberg won by none other than Slumdog Millionaire. At first before I even knew about the movie, I just noticed that the lead character was Dev Patel from one of my favourite British series called Skins which I had been watching since the first season which he played a Muslim role. Knowing he transitioned from a cast of a British series to the big screen and seeing him playing an Indian role drove my curiosity even more to watch this movie. I never regretted it.
To tell ya the truth, the most gratifying part watching The Oscars especially in another country is the fact that I've watched almost EVERY film being nominated on the show and able to actually understood and give credit for the nominees for their skillful acting and art. The only sad part about it is that I had to download them off the internet in order to watch good movies and good true acting without the risk of being censored in Malaysia.
Even if the movies made it into Malaysia, out of 10 international movies made, probably like what? 4 of them or less will only make it into the big screen in Malaysia and that is just seriously an abomination and a disgrace to the democracy in Malaysia's Independence. There, I've said it.
I'll definitely be watching some of the nominated movies that I haven't watched yet like Vicky Cristina Barcelona, Milk, Doubt, Rachel Getting Married, The Reader, Frost/Nixon just to name a few.

Before the movie was out in Star Cineplex, Kuching, I already had the liberty of getting my hands on a downloaded version of the movie "海角七號" or "Cape No. 7" from a friend and after watching the movie, indeed I applaud the director for making that risky leap to involve taiwanese singing artist as the cast for this movie, what moved me the most was how detailed and vivid the letters described the emotions and the predicament the writer felt at that time of war while being entangled in the intricacy of love.
Ever wondered what did the letter in the movie say? I mean like truly understand each word and character?
I never really understood what the letter said till I looked up on the internet here and trully had the time to read each of the written characters. Here's the actual contents of the love letters featured in the movie,

I have something that I just HAVE to share with you all. I feel that I would be doing injustice to the world if I did not blog about it. I'm talking about the latest teen drama series called Skins which has taken Britain by storm, apparently myself too.

I started following Skins through torrent downloading at EZTV and downloaded the first episode from the first series just to see what Skins was all about, then like how everyone would put it, the rest is history.
The characters are all very diverse friends aged 16-19 namely Tony, Michelle, Sid, Maxxie, Anwar, Sid, Chris, Jal and Cassie as the lead characters, each with their own unique roles. I guess the main reason for Skins' success is the role of the characters where no series could brilliantly portray profound issues dealing with the younger generation such as religion, homosexuality, depression, racism, friendship, drugs and even sex while at the same time relating to the viewers and daringly challenging and crossing the fine line on how society perceive what's right or what's wrong. I could go on, but that's just scraping the surface of this surprisingly brilliant programme. It's deep, thrilling, provoking and each episode follows the individual life of every character and their relationships with the people around them.

Although I couldn't make it to the screening of The Kite Runner at GSC in One Utama KL, thanks to the wonders of the internet and a very courteous roomate of mine who's willing to borrow me his laptop, I managed to get my hands on the DVD rip version of the movie in avi format from torrent download (not that it's illegal).
The Kite Runner tells the story of Amir, a boy who is haunted by the guilt of betraying his childhood friend Hassan, the son of his father's Hazara servant. Set against a backdrop of tumultuous events, from the fall of the monarchy in Afghanistan through the Soviet invasion, the mass exodus of refugees to Pakistan and the United States, and the Taliban regime (Wikipedia). The movie transcends discrimination and prejudice of what we perceive Afghans. Although the much talked about rape scene of sexual violence which wasn't even a big deal for any audience who's a movie buff like myself, sparked a controversy and lead to the movie being BANNED in Afghanistan due to some ethnic tension issues of a Hazara being raped by a Pashtun. Trust me, I've seen worst. No, not even close to adult films if you're thinking what I think you're thinking (grrr...).
What almost drew tears from me was when Amir found out about the death of his childhood friend Hassan who he never had the chance to apologize to. Instead in the end, Hassan wrote in the letter to Amir before he was killed saying that he will forever be waiting for the return of his friend in his home town despite all those years after Amir framed Hassan and betrayed their friendship. I wouldn't wanna elaborate any further or this entry would be a spoiler .
Truly a great movie and I could see why the book was (and still is) an international best seller from Khaled Hosseini.
My rating, 4 out of 5.
I wish I could fly kites like that.

Just watched Vantage Point last friday with my coursemates, the set was amazing really, and realistic. Not forgetting the explosion under the stage platform and the car chasing scenes. Superb. The back-track for all the roles of the cast and their perceptions before the alleged assassination that happened was understandable. If it wasn't for that, I guess no one would actually understand the movie.

Boy did it disappoint me. My disappointment isn't mainly on the movie, rather on the story line and plot. The whole plot and the climax was too coincidental. I think I'd have a better chance at a bird poo landing on my head after watching the movie.
There were a few points I noticed,
Bumping into the guy on the other side of the phone in one of the news feed screens in the news trailer while having the phone conversation?
Then there was this little girl who exchanged lines with this black guy who ended up as the actual heroine that caused the ambulance to flip under the bridge. Why the heroine u ask? The real president of the united states was in it.
Not just that, after the explosion the little girl were looking for her mother and ended up across the road somewhere under the bridge where the black guy was. The really amazing part was, the little girl just "ended up" there whereas the black guy ran took god knows how many blocks and how long it took to actually reach there.
Speaking of the black guy with the camcorder, of all the thousand people in the crowds at the gathering, the evil mastermind chose the black guy for a little small talk right before he uses his PDA to digitally aim the gun at the double, double referring to the president of the united states.
Not forgetting the conspiring "glowing" pretty lady in the ambulance that crossed eyes with the guy that was running away from the bodyguards was a piece of work. Of all random roads to escape from running bodyguards with firing guns, they just had to bump into each other on that road.
Even the real president of the united states (potus) was not rescued from a warehouse or saved from a battle heat of bullets, but rather ending up in an accident with all the casts of the movie were at the end. Where? I'll tell you.. UNDER THE BRIDGE!
I'll stop here for now, interested in more "miracle scenes"? go watch the movie. I've been trying to think of positive reviews for this movie and this is all I could came up with. Let's put it all in two words to sum it up for the plot and the movie.

Watched Cloverfield two nights ago. I was pretty excited to watch the movie at first, don't get me wrong I loved the movie. I mean just look at the movie poster, a headless statue of liberty with an opening through Manhattan buildings being walk over like Lego bricks. If you're a regular movie buff who LOVES watching movies, I'm sure u'll find this movie out of the ordinary. The friends that I went with to watch the movie said that it was pretty confusing and disorienting (mainly because of the 3rd person camera angles, I've heard of other friends that vomited when they came out of the cinema) and there was no substantial storyline or plot for the movie.

From what I think, the director, Matt Reeves, meant to make the film to seem like he broke into some national government high-security evidence storing facility in the future and managed to snatch this video of the "thing" that wreaked havoc in Manhattan, New York which in the end resulted in the annihilating bombing of the whole Manhattan Island, along with the creature on it. Amazingly this little video footage was salvaged from the debris and surfaced as the evidence for this horrific encounter.
One thing I absolutely loved was the amazing sound effects, especially when Hud who was holding the camera like a few feet away from the military launching a Bazooka directly at the creature followed by a fleet of tanks crawling through Manhattan Street while shooting missiles at it. It was surreal and the effects were realistic, not to mention the sound.
One thing that bothered me was the characters in the movie and their little love story, I mean making all the way from another side of the island to save this girl that was never actually his girlfriend, which if I may add, was punctured with a steel rod through her chest just above her heart. Not forgetting the fallen 45 degrees slanted apartment building that the lead character, Rob had to crawl through in mid air from another building to find his future-girlfriend, Beth. She should be dead with that kind of injury. Imagine waking up and realizing u had a steel road through your chest. I would die from shock if that rod didn't kill me.

Overall, I loved the movie. Matt Reeves talks about a sequel here which I can't wait. My rating u ask?
A solid 4 our of 5. Can't wait for the sequel, if there's one.

I was checking my email like usual everyday and I got this email address from AllMalaysiaN Bloggers Project saying that I won tickets to a special screening of the movie Rambo 4 in GSC Mid Valley on the 24th January 08. Initially I thought it was a regular weekly email from ambp about special events and I didn't even bother to read the email, so I clicked the link here in the email and guess what I saw,

It might not be a million ringgit cash prize or a 5 series BMW car or nothing special, but I figured it might be something interesting to blog about since I've never really won anything related to the blogging world. But since I'm 2 hours away from KL, I called kennedy and chee khoon to go claim the tickets and watch.
On another note, pardon my obvious absence from the blogosphere recently. I'll be busy for a few weeks up till chinese new year because of my involvement in the preparation for my university's spring festival celebration on the 23rd of february, not forgetting the stack of tutorials and reports waiting for me to get my hands dirty on.

I'm dumbfounded, stunned, and overwhelmed with mixed feelings of excitement, grotesque, and bizarreness for the movie. A sinful devotion of betrayal, love and hate.
Ang Lee has definitely lived up to my expectations for all his movies (except for The Hulk). I figured Ang Lee must've referred to a lot of positions in KamaSutra, the step-by-step holy grail of sexual gratification.
I don't know what to say about the movie really. The casting of Tang Wei was just perfect for her role. Her soft, delicate gestures for her twisted character was splendid and evil at the same time. I remembered in the beginning when Tony Leong had a S&M fetish for rough sex where he pulled her hair, slammed her against the wall, ripped her clothes off, puts his finger up her *****, pushes her face down on the bed, slaps her with the belt, ties her up, and did it, I freaked out. The lead actress stressed on the hatred she sees of him, but then it was because of love she fell apart. I guess the movie has a bittersweet sense of the whole plot.
My rating? I'll give a 4 out of 5 stars for the movie.

Alrite alrite, I think I know what you're gonna say.. Me watching this old, touchy touchy, teen -novel-made-on-screen movie. I've just gotta say something about it. It's SOoOooo touching that I teared in a few scenes. Yea, you heard me, I CRIED!! If you're into lovey dovey, jiwang-jiwang movies, you should watch. No guarantee that you'll not feel crappy and depressed after watching haha.
As much as I'm trying to not admit what just happened and the fact that I'm betraying my masculinity, indeed it is a good movie. I never had the chance to watch this movie in 2002 because I wasn't the movie goer then that I was now, moreover I remembered hearing good reviews from a lot of people at that time.
So, anyway.. Any idea of an old movie worth watching? I've still got 11 days in Kuching before I fly..

In the beginning of the movie, I was a sadist. I broke into laughters at a few scenes knowing how stupid he made a fool out of himself, ejecting himself onto the ramp and tripped over the LONGEST cliff fall ever in the movie-making history. One thing about the leading character is how naive and idiotic he was. I mean what was he thinking? An attempt to jump across a bus achieved with a modified bicycle with a motor attached to the rear tyre? get real...
The scene where Rod went through a painful reality check was when he combined all his "attempted" stunts and made a movie out of it for the fund he was accumulating for his stepfather. As much as the movie profited, his dignity and reputation shattered when the crowd laughed (just like what I did initially) and thought of him as a joke. Spoilers halted for now, I'll say no more.
For those interested in defying your destiny a believing that everyone is special in their own ways and destined to achieve greatness,
Be ready to be inspired.

Since last year, I've been torrent-downloading loads of movies, mainly from aXXo and I guess I'm turning into an English movie buff and over 46GBs of movie downloads up-to-date.
I remembered downloading movies in my second semester because of how ridiculously isolated my hostel was located. Imagine having to wait for a bus ride which shows up like once in an hour with another 15-30 minutes ride to the bus sentral, and then ANOTHER 15-20 minute bus ride down town to the local mall. Don't even get me started on the seats in GSC Malacca.
Of all the downloaded movies I've watched, some movies struck a little chord, some were brilliantly plotted with unexpected twists (my type) , some were SOoOo funny that I couldn't help breaking into laughter all by myself along with a cramped stomach. But one thing that bothers me is that I never actually get the chance to share, exchange comments on the movies with anyone when u actually get to say stuff like
"I'm sure u saw Demi had that ridiculously biggest hair-do ever in Bobby..."
"Did u notice Michael's shave-job in Sicko!?"
"I did not believe Tracy's mother was Travolta's acting in Hairspray!"
and they actually understand what u're talking about.
Although u get that overwhelming sense of contentment when the credits starts rolling at the end, the feeling just sucks.. real bad.
Then venus and mars collided, why haven't I thought of blogging about those movies and put up an entry about them as a review. In the past I've done reviews and I guess it never occurred to me over the past semesters to post a personal review on each single movies I've downloaded and watched. Like I mentioned before in the previous entries, all the schedules, studies, competition, politics in university life has really taken its toll on me.
I'm sorta back on track on blogging right now, but there's no guarantee once the plane lands and my personality shift commences that I'll be back to my old self when I'm writing this entry right now.

For this semester, dependent on faculty and courses, we were required to take co-curricular activities as a subject and having learn taekwondo before in secondary school, I chosed taekwondo along with a few of my coursemates.
Last wednesday, albeit the amount of assignments and work load piling up on us, we still made it for the 'Hari Mercu' performance where selected subjects were required to do a performance in front of the rector with several VIPs and god forbid, we were the first to perform.
Everything went smoothly till our head of the group gave the wrong command and we were all stunned for a moment there, it was the nerves, but soon we got back on track and did our best regardless of the situation. The performance included, punches, blocks, kicks, self-defense, pattern, sparring and erm.. breaking.
Yea, you heard me, BREAKING!
Tile-breaking to be exact. The closest form of breaking I did was only wooden planks and that was a few years ago, and now we're breaking roof tiles. I was among the 'lucky' ones among 11 guys to attempt the break two layers of roof tiles for the first time and during the first attempt during the performance. No training, no rehearsal for breaking whatsoever till the moment of truth. But as soon as we were on stage, the adrenaline rush and everything you could imagine from a nervous guy who hasn't been involved in taekwondo training for at least 5 years took the best of me. Then I realized that all those nerves and sweats were unnecessary as a simple punch would drive through the 2 layered tiles. Things would've been different if we were breaking 5 tiles and above all at once.
One of my housemate took a few videos of the event (still pending for another video from a friend for a full shot of the event), better lower down the speaker volume.

In the end, we were relieved that it all ended where the crowd all cheered with applause and screams and those cuts and bruises on our arms seemed trivial. That moment meant the world for all of us.
I'd like to express my deepest gratitude to Senior Lau for all the training and Master Chia for the lectures and self-defense techniques. This semester's co-curricular activities was the best and we could not ask for anything more. For the performing ones, congratulations to all for succeeding the performance, thumbs up! Finally, I'd like to take this chance to let all the members including performing and non-performing ones that it was a pleasure knowing you guys and hopefully we'll meet up again around campus.

The first week of class already we were given heaps of assignments and work for the semester. For Tamadun Islam, we were told to submit a movie entry to write a film review on it. However, the lecturer said that the movie was open to any categories which was really weird as he didn't mention anything remotely relating to religion or Islam. So the first thing that came up in my mind was the movie V for Vendetta.

Watched Curse of The Golden Flower yesterday afternoon with a few friends and I just have to get this out of my chest. The unbearably horrifying scenes of Jay Chow in an armor, that goatie and those sharp Chinese eyes ain't actually leader-of-ten-thousand-soldiers material man. The posters were already hilarious, I won't go further about how ridiculous he looked in motion.
It struck me that he looked like a certain character in an old Chinese folk tale character from Journey To The West. The resemblance goes way back to our ancestral roots.
The rest was history.
The fact that Jay Chow wrote a song based on the movie doesn't actually give him acting status in the movie. I still love Jay's song.
Aside from the bad role casting, the story line and the background set up was really good. If only it was another actor, then it'd be perfect.

Although seemingly impossible, the concept of inter-time-dimensional existence as the foundation of the plot made this movie stand out from other romance movies. Moreover starring actors like keanu reeves and sandra bullock with an unexpected happy ending, just how can u not watch it?
I give it a 4 out of 5... :)

Having watched two movies at KL (MI:3 and Poseidon), Kuching cinemas will never be the same for me again... NOT! actually both cinemas have more in common than anything, big screens, comfy seats, and stupid arctic-freezing air-conditioning. The only difference is that Kuching doesn't have IMAX hehe.. Watched Da Vinci Code last tuesday with Wei Khee, the conspiracy theories kinda make sense but I guess the down-letting part is that the movie didn't show more grounds and proof as well as explanations to the theories and plot shown in the movie, for example, about the involvement of Isaac Newton as grand master of the Priory of Zion, nor even the Templar Knights with Jerusalem. It would sound more convincing having a few of those questions answered. Owh well, I've learned to have an open mind about everything, including this movie. I'd give it a 4 out of 5 stars.
Be it roman catholics or christian-activists, square-minds isn't what pioneered the world to evolve, it is the minds of people who think out of the box, embrace differences and possibilities with an open mind to make it possible for us humans to be where we are now. Same thing applies here, simple as that.

watched The Island last night with tim and wei khee when I was actually supposed to help selling "Hainam" chicken rice with my aunt on the first night of the annual Kuching Festival since the Hainam Association are given 4 days of lease-free money making opportunity. Wanna know where it is? just go in through the left main entrance of the event and make your way to the end of the stalls at the corner beside the entrance to the garden show. Hurry guys! authentic hainamese chicken rice to pamper your taste buds for 4 days only.. wait, actually, it's 3.
Promos aside. The Island is the kind of movie that action and sci-fi diggers would be drooling for. I mean the thought of longevity and curing diseases through substituent clones and scenes of dangling on building logos being gunned at, huge steel "dumbells" rolling on the highway ejecting trucks like a trebuchet is already enough for a cramped jaw. Despite my inconvincing descriptioning, you guys just have to experience it yourself. Had supper later at open air and went to coffeemaster for a little chit chat.
the Harry Potter fever has started again and still I have yet got my hands on the book but seems like I don't need to since a certain cynical-idealist spilled the beans unintentionally in her msn nick..
School tomorrow which means elevating stress again..
