(was) back in town

Was back in Kuching for less than two weeks, but due to some accreditation issues with my university, here I am now back in Melaka, reluctantly if I may add. Still trying to hold on to every shred of optimism that I can find so far. Anyway, hope you guys won't mind this blog post being overdue.

I guess it's been 11 months since May last year the last time I was in Kuching adding on to the fact that I skipped Chinese New Year for the first time this year. Although it was only a week plus, I vowed to spend each and everyday to the fullest and fulfill my undying ever craving for Kuching food! Do note that I'm saying this while totally being unaware of the excess weight I gained. That's me being in denial.

Anyway, back to this entry.. been so long since the last time I was at LCCT terminal and I'd not know about the one-hand-carry-bag-not-exceeding-7kg-policy till I checked in my luggage. Fortunately enough I bought my plane ticket that time with a check-in baggage of 20KG at that time assuming that there would be a load full of stuff to bring back to Kuching for good, at the end I checked-in a luggage and a hand-carry item before going into the departure hall. To my surprise, I saw this right at the Departure Hall entrance.

what is this!?

Why can't AirAsia use a proper weighing scale that is more presentable? I refuse to believe that with the profit revenue that AirAsia currently generates in a year they can't afford a decent digital weighing scale that's more easier on the eyes and less pathetic. LCCT would look lesser of a Malaysian night market as it already is.

The first thing I did when I landed in Kuching was going for mixed grill with Ken at petanak and got addressed by the title "Uncle", first time I felt so old being called an uncle. Snapped photos of most of my food quest around Kuching and these are the few of my favourite eating spots in Kuching that I love so badly.

Song Hin porridge at open air, my favourite pork liver porridge. Cooked to perfection, slightly medium rare and not over-cooked, just how I like it.

not your ordinary squishy over-cooked pork liver

Chin Seng,
best Fried Oyster at open air next to Song Hin porridge. You can actually see and taste the oysters, unlike the ones at the Peninsular where the oysters were small, over-cooked till it was too dry, and too heavy on the tapioca flour.

for RM12, to me it's really worth it.

Of course not forgetting the Fried Chicken Kolo Mee at Da Wan Gong @
大碗公 at Jalan Ang Cheng Ho, the reason why this particular dish of kolo mee was special to me and my most favourite other than the taste is somewhat personal for me. When I was in primary school, I remembered that my mom brought me there every sunday morning for breakfast before sending me off to my mental arithmetic class and no matter how many times the store was relocated (three times), my mom would eventually find it and bring me there and I would order Fried Chicken Kolo Mee every single time and my mom would always give some comments about me doing so, just one of the little things that me and my mom shared together.

my favourite variant of Kuching Kolo Mee

Another favourite hometown dish of mine is definitely the Sarawak Laksa at Chuan Choon Cafe! this stall is situated in the middle of town and during morning weekends, the place would be ridiculously packed like crazy and I swear there would be moments you thought as if you were in KL. Personally, to me this particular sarawak laksa didn't really have an impression on me, I just went simply because it was near my place and I had a hard craving for Sarawak Laksa for breakfast.

love the 3-layer teh c peng with the laksa

There's this place that I went during secondary when I remembered going to 7th mile for 3-layer teh C peng occasionally at night situated somewhere near the airport, back then I still remembered the first time we heard "3-layer teh C peng" in Kuching was at this very place at 7th mile where I dare say it all started. The 3-layer teh C pengs of all 3-layer teh C pengs! One thing about the teh C peng in Kuching and the ones at peninsular is the layer of brown sugar at the bottom, they used thick syrup instead of brown sugar and some of them used some sweetening green-ish liquid! Don't even get me started on the tea layer.

7th Mile, forgot the kopitiam's name, best 3-layer Teh C Peng in Kuching

This famous ice kacang stall called Yeo Ah Seng has been there since I was born I think, back then I still remembered the worn out tables and stools with the poorly cemented platforms, worst of all the stalls were situated near an actual drain. Now, the local government built a small hawker center nearby for the stalls to relocate to the new location, but the ice kacang is still good as ever, they even built a recreational park just on top of the old location. One thing I missed so much is the cendol! I never knew what to call the green chewy thingy up till when I was at Melaka where they called it "cendol". The major difference between the particular cendol in Melaka and Kuching is the texture. In Kuching, the cendol has a more chewy texture but the cendol in Melaka is agar-agar like (yucks). Personally, I prefer the chewy one better of course.

behind Chung Hua No. 3, one of the best tasting ice-kacangs in Kuching

chewy green cendol!

Aside from the quest for local Kuching food, Nurul exposed me to a new sensation with ShiSha at Little Lebanon which I never had the balls to try up till now, I really have no idea why was it even called that anyway. I just remembered the next morning I woke up with a sore throat from the excessive inhaling I think. Nurul, we've got to do this more often sometime! Might I also add that the fishkebab is divine!

Shisha

Aside from my slow death in my attempt of trying to lose weigh with Kuching food, most of the times were spent with my Kuching buddies since most of them had already finished their degree (well sort of) and had came back for their holidays.. it was the breakfasts, lunches, dinners, the movies, the rants during supper with them that made coming back to Kuching worth it. Being away from the familiarity of friends and my hometown and having to deal with Melaka for almost 11 months really took a toll on myself, and I guess all I needed was a place where I could be myself and really smile for once.

something that I've missed out for so long...

Took me a while to finish this entry as I was in the middle of interviews and tests and just only this week I could finally breathe because this week's lecture week and without exams, but I won't be saying the same for the coming weeks ahead.. gosh, I wish
I get offered a job soon and everything would just end...

unplugged

I was browsing through a few blogs of my friends and one of them was Nurul's blog. Then to my surprise I noticed a YouTube video of our former classmate Charles on the guitar doing an acoustic cover version for Secondhand Serenade's Awake. You've gotta be impressed haha.. Here's the video,

And here's another cover on Secondhand Serenade's Fall For You.

Feels weird seeing a former classmate of mine singing on YouTube haha.. but to be honest, he's pretty good at it!

He asked me not to blog about it, but you think I'd listen? Yeahh righttt.....

p/s: dude Charles.. if you're reading this entry, make sure u call me out as soon as u landed in kuching aight? been ages man~

2009

Chapter 2008 of my life has now closed and a second later, a new chapter 2009 is opened, subjected to all possibilities and unraveling paths ahead as each second ticks.

The author of this amazing revelation? Time itself.

Year 2008 for me is a pretty big step in finding myself if I could put it that way. Weirdly, in that year I've opened up to a few close friends and rendered myself pretty vulnerable compared to the years before. It's not a bad thing, but it seems really intimidating knowing what others know and think about you. It's kinda frightening and at the same time a relief. Nevertheless, thanks guys.

I browsed through my archives and couldn't find a new years resolution for last year! (guess I didn't make one) But I did make one in my 2004 resolution. Funny enough, I managed to fulfill 3 out of those 5 resolutions made 4 years ago during the span of 4 years. This year, a few friends reminded me to make a new year's resolution for 2009. But then, it got me thinking why limit the possibilities by setting goals and objectives in my life for the future? I never liked the idea of my life being controlled, boxed by thoughts, targets, objectives, principles or even righteous doctrines, but I'd rather have an open mind on what would come out of my life letting time unfold itself and striving to be a better person in every single moment of it. How's that for a new year's resolution instead?

I guess looking back each year through my blog archives a few years back, I realized how much I've matured, regretted and reflected. Blogging has become a part of my life now over the past few years and I wouldn't throw that away for anything else.

Happy new year u guys ;)

help me cum

or should I say "help cum me", "cum help me" or just "me cum help"? Isn't it amazing how sentence structuring can alter the meaning of a message in so many ways? Anyway, back to this entry.

Normally those who are already familiar with short text messaging (SMS), would probably be familiar with the word "cum" as a simpler way to represent "come" (I'm guessing Alexis would know better if he's reading this) by just thumbling "C", "U" and "M" as opposed to thumbing "C", "O" with a pause then "M" again then "E" which is pronounced the same only without the pause and the extra letter.

In this sense, SMS jargons are forgivable and there's undoubtedly nothing unorthodox about it. However, if road signs were to be labeled or banners printed with these jargons... the world would end, seriously. Still, our brain would be able to associate these jargons (or mistakes) with words or meanings that would bring some sense into it.

BUT putting it like THIS, is simply unforgivable.

I was laughing so hard once I saw this vacancy sign walking back from lunch with Kennedy, snapped a shot and soon realized that the store actually meant "Vacancy - Welder cum Helper". I guess when the store owner was hiring welders, he then decided that he needed more welders/helpers to "cum" instead.

Let's just hope that the public won't just focus on a specific part of the sign like how I did. It really made my day.

Did it made yours?

updated: for those who "allegedly" claims that they do not know what "cum" is, click here for the definition for further clarification.

I dun even know why I tagged along...
------------------------------------------------

Here are the rules. To tag along: you have to list 7 weird things about yourself, post it in your blog, tag at least 7 people (list their names), and comment on their blog to let them know that you just tagged them. Want to get know more about me? Now is your time!

1. I procrastinate A LOT and I'm gdmf good at it.
2. I sweat a lot (I mean A LOT) when I'm nervous and after I drink big gulps of water.
3. I have a thing for girls that uses make up (the thing isn't necessarily a good thing).
4. I'm very dependent on friends.
5. I love cheesecakes. Not weird enough? Well, I bake them... and also, I cook.
6. If I ever ended up in a situation where I have to make a decision on colours, it'll always be GREEN (if you hadn't noticed yet).
7. I never do tags, this is my first, so savor it...

I tag...

Liang Wee, Jathniel, Jessica, Tze Chee, Wei Khee, Kim Seng, Bing Han.

Next step is copying the rules (above), write 7 weirdies, inform 7 of your blogger friends, and it goes on and on...

Wednesday, October 1

It all started with this photo below when we were on our way back from class. On the way we saw a pile of gas canisters scattering on the road side with the lorry carrying the Petronas gas canisters going overboard, I figured it lost control while making a 270 degrees turn going up the fly-over. I guess the heavy cargo load messed up with the physics giving mother nature and gravity it's fair chance to manifest it's wrath on the ridiculous fuel price hike.

I wanted to snap the shot but I was in a moving car, but Rheeno was on his bike and stopped on the road side snapping the photos, so I asked him to email me the photos to blog about it but then I submitted to The Star's Thumbnails instead just to give it a shot. After all, it's a chance for a RM50 giveaway.

Amazingly, it got published in The Star on the 5th of September issue! But I never saw it because our rented house didn't have a subscription for The Star.

It was when I got back from class after and got a email from The Star asking for my idenfication number, name and address while congratulating me. It didn't occur to me at first that it was from the photo I sent a few weeks ago, I just realized it after seeing the email domain. I responded and yesterday I got the cheque the mailbox in the rented house in Melaka, imagine how psyched I was. I called up Rheeno and told him the good news and agreed to split the prize money.

Of course owing most of the credits to Rheeno for taking photos of the accident with his w810i.

Now... any idea where's the nearest Standard Charted bank in Batu Berendam Melaka to cash out? haha...

I meant dead not in the physical sense but rather more to my inner being, my principles, my emotional well-being, everything that's in my head. Sometimes, I wish that I was REALLY physically dead, so I'd never have to be bothered by all those intricate details that my mind weaves around my life every single day.

Perhaps Hammy has a better idea of what I'm trying to say here...

don't worry guys, she's not really dead yet, she's just playing dead and lazing around... will be back soon with more entries if I'm not dead yet...

Sunday, September 14

Well, I've been off my game lately especially in blogging. Honestly, I have no idea why, I'm starting to think that I have to start re-organizing my schedule and start putting everything in a controlled environment. Letting time slip by and making last minute work just doesn't cut it.

Anyway, it's mid-autumn better known as 中秋节 in chinese. So, I bought mooncakes

...slightly smaller than usual.

back with more entries as soon I get things settled.

Sunday, August 31

I was down with influenza along with the full package of all those aches, sores, weird climate reactions and f*cked up mood swings for the past few days. It was unexpectedly surprising and touched to see the amount of friends who responded to my "sick" display message in msn, enough for me to wish that I was sick every single day. Believe me, it wasn't intentional. I was so touched to the extent that I felt as if I was sexually molested.

Despite all that, it did not stop us from stepping out of the house and jumping on the bandwagon with all Malaccans to celebrate Malaysia's Independence day. However, I was rather disappointed this year because unlike the previous years when MITC (Melaka International Trade Center) had countdown live on national TV with firework displays, nothing significant happened this year. Well, maybe it's just me along with the other hundreds of people waiting at MBMB (Majilis Bandaraya Melaka Bersejarah) and MITC.

Nevertheless, the burning patriotism in the Malaccan people can be witnessed from the group of kampung road bikers to the dim sum stall taukenios in Jonker Walk.

See?

Happy Belated Birthday Independence Malaysia.

p/s: Thanks to all those that msged me, I'm gradually recovering and to those who thought that the lady in the photo was me, see carefully leh! since when I got boob clevage!?!?!

Saturday, June 14

Went over to Green heights mall last night for Cold Storage's first grand opening with Ken, Siew and Alexis.

There were so many people swarming that place and getting through the crowd was ridiculous.

get what I mean? Maybe not, how about this?

Crazy chin...

Well, it was a breath of fresh air seeing Cold Storage with it's first opening in Kuching. Situated along the airport route to town at the BDC roundabout. Strategic? Probably, but not now anyways. However, across the road at the other side of the roundabout was a construction site in progress, rumored to be a hotel upon completion. How many star? dunno leh...

So anyway, I went inside Cold Storage thinking the stuff here must be cheap since I could see everyone buying goods and the check out counter was clearly traffic congested that even security guards were directing customers like traffic. I headed straight to the dairy goods and looked for of course Philadelphia Cream Cheese, and boy was I shocked. RM11.79! Siaw ah!

Please lah, the cheapest I've bought for Philadelphia Cream Cheese was only RM9.40 and it was just less than a week ago. Not just that, imported yogurts would cost you RM60+ for the same portion of yogurt you could get at any local supermarket for just RM1.80! siaw or not? Too bad I didn't snap a photo of the IMPORTED yogurt. If not I guarantee, you all really ki siaw.

After much shock, congestion and nearly at the brink of ki siaw on the first floor, we took the escalator to the second floor to see if there were anymore surprises in store for us.

Guess what?
Kang Kang!?!

Not even one store was opened, and that day was the grand opening?! I dunno leh...

I guess Green heights mall's target customers are for the privileged ones. BDC itself is a residential area known for it's inhabitance of privileged people. There's even a condominium beside the 2-storey mall.

So far this is the last mall I've rumored opening in Kuching other than The Spring and Boulevard, let's see what surprises I'd be getting the next time I fly back Kuching.

Flying off to Malacca in one week! *sobs*

Thursday, June 12

Around the end of May last month, Airasia flew in three strangers from Johor Bahru across the South China Sea and landed in Kuching.

They wreaked havoc and brought destruction and misery to the people of Kuching. The dark age begun.

Nah... JUST KIDDIN! haha.. Just making a failed attempt at a dramatic intro. Last month my coursemate, Wen Sheng and a few of his friends Tuck Whye and Kian Seng flew in to Kuching for a two-day visit then off to Miri. I've gotta say, they were a handful but I guess having guests from the peninsular Malaysia and bringing them around Kuching was all worth it.

like I said, a handful...

Funny enough, I realized that they were a few places that I haven't been to and a few delights that I haven't tasted in Kuching. Of course, they were all explored during their stay. I've gotta say, it was pretty surreal having your coursemate in Melaka and seeing him in your hometown.

As soon as they landed, I brought them to taste what REAL kolo mee taste like in Kuching, as opposed to the ones in the peninsular, in my all-time-favourite kolo mee shop, 大碗公 (in direct translation, "big bowl grandfather") situated at Jalan Ang Cheng Ho.

could you just smell the garlic?

my favourite, fried chicken kolo mee! *slurp*

The view across The Waterfront at Sungai Sarawak in the afternoon was nice as usual.

So nice that we decided to take a sampan ride across the Sungai Sarawak and well, I'd say that it's not for the heavy ones if u don't know how to do weight balancing.. and no, I'm not talking about myself, I went on too you know!

It was a rocky ride, and it didn't help by the fact that Fort Margherita or the Orchid Garden was either closed or gone for the construction of the Dewan Undangan Negeri. I would've put a photo of the D.U.N in construction but I wouldn't wanna cause anymore uproar here than it already has.

Tired and exhausted, I brought them back to their hotel, checked in let them have a few hours sleep before any further exploration later in the evening. Apparently, being the football fans they were, they were awake the whole night watching a match and went straight to the Senai Airport and flew in to Kuching.

Thursday evening for a mall stroll in The Spring, Boulevard, Tun Jugah, or Sarawak Plaza in Kuching wasn't actually the perfect timing. They were pretty bummed out by the population of GIRLS in Kuching, I mean being rational, who WOULD even go for mall strolling on a weekday? They flew in on thursday morning and left on friday evening.

Sarawak Cultural Village was a must for first time peninsulars of course, so we took a 45 mins drive up hoping to not get lost because I've never drove up Damai myself. Kennedy, Kevin and Siew Joo's boyfriend all gave me the same direction:

"After roundabout, take the first turn on your left, go straight, after traffic light, turn right and go straight till the end
..."

Amazingly I didn't get lost.

tents up for harvest festival

They had fun harvesting the padi rice, attempting the cultural "foot trap" dance, risking falling off the raft and drowning, saw some pretty japanese girl tourists and even a hand at music instruments(I've got the video to prove it later on).

again, a handful

While we were at one of the houses, I strummed the guitar hanging on the walls while carefully examining the piece,

then out of no where, this guy silently came up on the doorway and scared the hell out of me with his expressionless face.

He sat down on the doorway and strummed a few tunes and surprisingly pointed to Wen Sheng to play with him on the xylophone-like instrument. Hell, I've even got the video to prove it.

I guess he wasn't very good at it.

We stopped by Damai Beach resort on the way back for a 15 minutes rest.

feelin the breeze eih?

I wanted to bring them to visit Museum Sarawak but it was closed ON TIME at 4.30pm when we reached. So punctual for what!??! Instead they snapped a few photos at the aquatic museum at nearby.

I don't even know what to say.

As a finale, I brought them up Civic Center for a bird's eye view on Kuching on a larger scale. Luckily enough, the elevators were still open.

To be honest with you, it was a little dizzy for me.

You know wad they say, every beginning has to be an ending. Wanted to bring them to the clubbing scene in Kuching for some real Kuching girls but again, like I said, wrong timing. Drove them to the airport and send them off to Miri.

I called Wen Sheng at Miri and they said the girls there were better. Of course they are, it's a weekend!!

Well, it was fun but there were still a few places that I didn't have time to show them around due to their short stay. Looking forward to more visits.

Expect my next entry on an incident in LCCT when I bumped into a few bitches while waiting for my flight back Kuching. Till then...

Wednesday, June 11

At first when I saw it in front of Sarawak Plaza while waiting for the traffic, I literally thought that it was an animal from far since I didn't have my contacts on but after much long stares, I concluded that it was a sheep or a lamb for that matter, but then it struck me. A sheep/lamb in Malaysia?! No way... let alone in Kuching.

After much confusion and effort from my brain trying to put together that ridiculous image which all happened in I don't know... 2 seconds? I then noticed two "nipples" sticking out (which looked like speakers) with it's motorcycle exterior, then I broke down.

it's a sheep?! it's a lamb!? NO, it's a motorbike...

Here, I'll zoom it out for you...

Oh my Lor... Lamb?

I'm guessing the owner is some kind of an animal-hater/lover? particularly with sheep? First of it's kind in the world (I hope so), which somehow reminds me of that big flop a.k.a. ridiculously horrendous thriller movie about some sheep gone wild.

Also, it brings up this question which might had popped into your head when u saw that photo. "What if it rains??"

Remember, u saw it first on beaned.blogspot.com! I guess it's safe to say it's,

Inspired by LAMB (no, not your label Ms.Gwen Stefani).
